Graphite, Feathers, Quills
When making these graphite and feather drawings, Coit was mindful of the connection between feathers—used as quill pens for hundreds of years—and markmaking. The drawings were a form of personalized punch cards for accessing information hidden or secured within an abstract form. The perforations—some made with a needle, some with the quills themselves—were gestural marks, as well as implied language.
